Toniná is one of the great ancient Mayan cities. Protected by the beautiful valley of Ocosingo, the heart of Chiapas, we discover this magnificent city of more than a thousand years of occupation. Late Classic (600-900 AD) Toniná, a large stone house in Tzeltal Maya, had influences from other ethnic groups such as the Olmec and Toltec, something we observed in other Mayan cities. The peoples, the different cultures, we have been influencing throughout the whole of Humanity, and the Mayan civilization was not exempt of the natural territorial influences. Part of this is seen in its architecture, such as the greasy stepped spiral that we recognize from the puuc style of the Yucatan Peninsula, or the god Chaac. Late Classic (600-900 AD) The period of greatest rise, as recorded in the writings, engravings, reliefs and pieces that have been setting the puzzle of this city, we see in the Classic Maya Period. Between 840 and 900 she was the political dominator of the region. And we talked about a region where it coexisted and battled with big cities like Palenque, Tikal, Yaxchilán or Calakmul … it’s no small thing!
