Piedras Negras is one of those places that takes you a bit beyond the conventional. This impressive Mayan archaeological zone is sheltered under the Guatemalan jungle, on the banks of the Usumacinta River.

  • Piedras Negras is on the Guatemalan side of the Usumacinta River, within the Sierra del Lacandón National Park.
  • Cost: the entrance is the least, about 50 quetzales, the price of the boat is 3500 MXN.
  • From where to go? The boats to Piedras Negras depart from Frontera Corozal (Mexican side) or Bethel (Guatemalan side). More options from Frontera Corozal. They are between 3 and 5 hours sailing, depending on the time of year and conditions of the river. You can share the cost of the boat with other travelers, although there are few that go to Piedras Negras. From Palenque they sell trips by land to Piedras Negras, although they seldom leave.
  • How to get there by public transport? To Corozal Border arrives collective transport from the terminal of Palenque (3 hours aprox.). Bethel is reached from Flores, in Tikal, Guatemala.
  • In a single day, leaving very early, you can stop for descent in Yaxchilán (40 km downstream).
  • It is recommended to wear light and light clothes, hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, better closed shoes and some water and food will do you good.
